Life Coaching 101: Failure is okay

How the Schitt’s Creek taught us life coaching 101.

What the Rose Family Taught Us

Now that I'm a Schitt’s Creek convert, I ask myself why it took me so long to start binging this witty, quirky, loveable show. Confess it took a few episodes to fully appreciate what Dan and Eugene Levy had in mind. Maybe it was the screaming and sobbing and over-the-moon drama. Or the riches-to-rags plotline.

Yet, by the time I watched the last episode, tissue in hand, I was a member of their family, waving goodbye as Moira and Johnny drove off, as the Rose Family and friends were embarking on new chapters.

Just how did the Rose Family, Johnny, Moira, Alexis, and David add life coaching to their repertoire? Each character in her or his own way shared some pretty amazing lessons. Here are my top favorites.

You Be You: Make No Excuses!

Moira Rose. Regardless of her circumstances she never flinched one inch from her true self.

“One must champion oneself and say, ‘I am ready for this!’” Moira, coaching Twyla.

From her Thesaurus-inspired quips to those Here-I-Am! outfits, Moira knew who she was and never once apologized.

This is where the life coach in me gets super pumped! I love when I see clients learn to stand their ground. Step fully into their power. And know that their gifts and talents are needed because they are unique and important!

Sometimes When Your Life Blows Up, It’s a Good Thing

The Rose Family descended from a 24-thousand-square-foot home to two paltry adjoining rooms offering barely enough wall space for their ginormous self-portrait. Upon seeing her new dwelling, daughter, Alexis immediately SOS-dials a boyfriend to come to rescue her. Only to learn he has dropped her for a better party.

“I’m just saying…A part of me feels like…I’m almost glad that we lost the money.” Alexis, final episode epic mic drop.

Well. Not to this degree, but many of my clients say that that bump in the road or setback ended up being a blessing in disguise. It’s the going-through-it that's the tough part. And that's where a life coach can help.

You Don't Need to Know Everything

David’s quest to open his own store is a perfect example. He saw a vacated storefront, knew there was a need for curated skin and healthcare products, and took the leap of faith, investing what money he recently earned to make his dream a reality.

As Dr. Harneet Kaur confirmed in Psychology Today, getting out of your comfort zone opens you up for new beginnings.

Did David know how to apply for a business license? Was he aware of grant monies that could help? No on both counts. What he did have were a vision and a growing belief in himself. Along with people like Patrick (who later becomes his husband, but that’s another blog post) who came along to help.

Do you have an idea that keeps knocking on the door but you don’t know all the steps to take?

Well, you can bet the Universe will conspire for your greater good, putting options and people in your path at the right time!

As your life + mindset coach, I can walk you through the details, helping you to shoo away that inner critic, and guide you to take the first step. And the next.

You Aren’t Too Old to Reinvent Yourself

“Tweet us on Facebook.” -Johnny Rose

Multimillionaire. Waiter. Handyman. Motel mogul. Johnny Rose carried himself and his family from riches to rags and back again. After he accepted his circumstances and realized complaining didn't get him anywhere, he began seizing the opportunities within his grasp. How? His inner strength tapped the experience of building Rose Video into North America’s second-largest video chain.

Lauren Gordon in her Scary Mommy article points out that Johnny always remembered to keep looking for opportunities to grow and how it can open up possibilities you never dreamed of.

What life experiences can help you move to the next level or achieve a bucket list check-off: Those hard knocks are worth their weight in gold. Ready to cash them in and take a bold leap of faith?

Sounds life changing. Coaching is that and so much more!

(I wonder how long it will take them to start shooting the Schitt's Creek Reunion episode?!)
